Gamer Station Thread

A thread to talk about possible abilities gained from charactors that Gamer would meet. Any game charactor. Even JADE! <.< I liked Beyond Good And Evil....

Also a thread to talk about the Game Station in general, methinks. Origons, how it works, why you would want it ect

Link would totally be the Spin Attack, for one. Or the sword beams. Gamer wouldn't need the Master Sword, would he? He already has the Beam BatImeanSword.

And since I mentioned Jade inexplicably... he'd get that disc shooter thing. And maybe the ability to sneak.

What about Pokemon? o.O
8-Bit

Hmmm, interesting...

In my opinion for pokemon I'm thinking of something like the pokeballs in SSB and SSBM. Summon a pokemon, it does an attack then disappears.

For Samus, I would say he would get the charge beam. Much like the Super Scope (as seen in CG: OCC) he would get Samus' blaster which would be able to shoot small shots and the bigger shots.
Skybait J

But that wouldn't add the variety to it. It'd be the same thing with Megaman's blaster. He's more widly known for the blaster, yes, but Gamer already has a gun, he doesn't need more.

Samus would be Ice Beam! Cause Ice Beam was in Metroid before any other game.
Naryu Elda

If he makes a link with Samus, I think that he'd get the Ball mode, but at the same time, that would probably hurt. Alot. Poor Gamer, crushed into a ball by his own power...

I doubt whether Pokemon would even be realized, thus calling into question what he would get from them. They would prove to be far too dangerous. I mean, sure they're pretty much harmless in their first forms (ones that do not level up are excluded from this comment), but as they level up and evolve, they get VERY dangerous. Pokemon have caused problems in the games, as seen with Snorlax blocking routes and Red Gyrados causing problems in the lake (Admittedly, the latter was caused by Team Rocket, but it shows how troublesome they can be when enraged.) They have also caused trouble in the cartoons like Diglets stoping construction, and even in the manga, in which a giant Haunter was using Dream Eater on the Pokemon and humans of Lavender Town for years. Pokemon are just too much of a danger to realize.

Not just that, but there is about four-hundred of them now, so there is no way they would realize THAT many beings all in one go. And if he gets powers from them, the only way he would be able to use their powers if he himself gained their power (ex: Gamer able to do Teleport, like Psychic Pokemon) was if he linked with a Ditto, but he already has copied a copy ability. Oh, he could do Mew, but I don't think they would realize TMs and HMs. If Gamer gets Pokeballs from linking, I think it would be through linking with a trainer, but then he would be limited to the team the trainer had at the time of the link.

Heh. Imagine if the trainer had a team of Dittos. Not much help there. But imagine if the trainer had a high-level team consisting of something like a Typhlosion, a Articuno, a Mew, a Gengar, a Houndoom, and a Raichu. I pray that Gamer has a full set of badges...
Skybait J

Well, who knows what IDR'll do? If they were gonna create all the Pokemon, they wouldn't just realease them into the wild, would they? They'd probably do something like Pokemon stadiums or breeding grounds? Those would be good for studying all kinda of things about Digitally Realized beings, see if they're "normal". And then Team Rocket would all come and Gamer would have to save the day....

But as things are going now, they're only realizing the main charactor from the games, so Pikachu would probably represent Pokemon. Or Ash/Satoshi. Pikachu's power is obvious, but with Ash...I'm going with SSB random pokeball tosses.
Konoko

I agree, Pokemon seem a little too big a thing to bring into the real world, maybe a digital realm but otherwise, yeah, just a few single examples from pokemon

Samus, I'd say the power would have to be the Screw Attack. The icon for it is pretty much the metroid series logo, after all.
Personally, I'd love it if he ended up getting a link with one of the metroids instead, but thats probably just because the first one I played was Super Metroid and I totally fell in love with that larva one that grew up and was all, Skree! <3 Mummy!

Yes, thats exactly how it went in my memory. =)

Other suggestions could include...Final Fantasy? Some of that Dark Knight goodness?
Maybe something extra Retro. XP Pacman? Ability to eat badguys/ghosts? Nahhh....Jetpac? Wait....BUBBLE BOBBLE! =D

That or...hmm...Castlevania is pretty big, but considering the whole thing revolves around the villain and his house rather than the protaganists, I think IDS would be cautious on that front. XD
Skybait J

According to a poll of a major magazine, the current most popular video game charactor is Master Chief. This is follwed by alot of Nintendo charactors, Mario was a very close second.

What would Gamer get from Halo? I've never played that game.
8-Bit

Well Halo has a variety of weapons, one of them actually appeared in comic #94, Czar uses a game card to get the Needler gun from Halo.

To show, http://www.bobandgeorge.com/Fancomics/Gamer/Gamer.html?32

Other weapons he could get... The Beam sword perhaps? Or Plasma Grenades.

Oh heres another character, Viewtiful Joe. Trying to stray away from his common abilities (Zoom, Fast, Slow) I think he would get the "Voomerang." Throwing a sharp boomerang that, in the game, was on Joes helmut.
Skybait J

I've said it once and I'll say it again: Gamer would not get any repeat powers. The weapon would simply be useless that way. Though the beam sword is a bit different from his Beam Bat thing >.>

And I remember that comic, but that wasn't Captain Gamer getting it....did Czar get the Needler from Master Chief?! OoO
Naryu Elda

I think Czar Linked with one of the Covenant, since Master Chief is the hero.

As for Gamer and Halo, maybe he'd get the plasma grenades? Sticky balls of doom in the hands of our favorite non-armored human! Hehe. Imagine...
Grunts: "They're everywhere! AUGH!"
Gamer: "... One man with a plasma grenade and they think an army is upon them."
8-Bit

I thought that too Nayru, Czar might have gotten it from the covenent.

Since Czar has gamercards as well should we include some ideas we get of what things he could get?

Since he seen as the antagonist I would assume that his cards would come from the villains since the Covenet was seen as the "evil," group in the game. So I would say he would get cards from ;inking with villains such as Bowser, Ganondorf and characters along those lines, what do you think?
Konoko

Ok, we know Czar gets:
Orange(Gunstar Heroes) - Orange Charge.
Super Smash Bros? - A Beam Bat. (Possibly Super Smash Bros, same as gamer)
Convenant(Halo) - Needler.

Other suggestions...
Bowser - Firebreath? o.O Bowser Strength?
Ganon - His homing blast or ground slam (OoT mostly)? Or that charge punch (SSB)?

I also would think someone from Metroid. I guess if Gamer got the Screw Attack, Czar might get Life Drain from the Metroids. Or whatever the X parasites do, I forget. o.o

I wondered if he might get powers roughly analageous to Cap, or from villains starring opposite characters he got his from, but besides the cliche, it wouldn't make that much sense. And some things really don't have good powers. I also wonder if Support Units would count as a power, if roughly analogous things could be copied...they'd probably take up more space than a regular game card, or be time limited, but I'm looking at Treble, then at Czar and thinking pure awesome. xD
Although, on the other hand, I look at King Deedee, and I got pretty much nothing.
Um. Penguin Slide power? Cap does the megaman slide and Czar goes along on his belly. XD

Bowser may give him a Spikey Shell or perhaps his strength / Ground Pound. For Fire Breath, all Czar could get it somewhere else, but why get it when there are items like the Fire Flower and the Fire Rod?

Ganondorf, perhaps his Warlock Punch or something along the lines of that? Perhaps those nifty Glowing Energy Balls of Doom he likes to chuck at Link? If it was Ganon instead of Ganondorf, maybe Czar'd get the Trident or maybe a Dark Link Summon Card?

Konoko wrote:

So far, we have seen Links with only main characters (since they are the ones Realized), so CAN they even Link with a Metroid?
On the subject of Metriod, perhaps he'd get Kraid's stomach-needle or back-spine boomerang? Maybe if he Linked with Mother Brain, he'd be able to control Metroids?

Konoko wrote:

Support Units would probably be either of the "One Time Only" sort or a "Limited Period of Time, after which you have to wait X amount of time before using it again."
But also, I don't know if they would get Support Units, since the heroes/villains sort of take up that slot.

Konoko wrote:

Okay, for some odd reason, the Penguin Sled game from... Lynx? (Tux was the name of the character) is playing through my head. The ice-areas were fun.
Back on topic, I think that he'd get Dedede's hammer. It would be interesting to see what would happen if Gamer got Amy's hammer too. *laughs*

Speaking of Sonic, maybe Czar would get Robo Knux's Knuckle-Spikes? Or maybe, instead of a Link, Robotnik would give Czar a cloaking device, jets, or a laser cannon?
Konoko

Well, Orange was just one of the bosses in Gunstar heroes and Metroids turn up a fair bit more, the series being named after them and all...I wouldn't rule it out. The stuff with Kraid, seems a little harder. I can envision summoning the claw boomerang, but not the needle spike, if only because some body reshaping would likely be needed and gamecards seem to be more enhancements, equipment and iconic powers, rather than actually growing spikes or wings. Damn, linking with Mother Brain though...she had some interesting telepathy thing going on, seeing Samus coming from afar, let alone what I personally dubbed the Rainbow Brain Beam 'o' death.

Although for some reason, I'm starting to doubt Czar will get a counterpart to Caps weapons, in terms of from the same series. Sure, there'll be some, but otherwise, I could see him getting villain powers from either more recent games or more obscure games, or simply getting equipment ones the same as Cap could. But in terms of effect, likely similar. The Orange Charge effectively combines both speed and strength into a single attack, so the Sonic Run and DK Strength could be figured to be at least partly there. I think he might also have some sort of cloaking power, to match agains Caps movement based ones, so...I'll try and think of a villain that has stealth powers. xP Maybe something from the metal gear series?

Didn't Cap use the V-watch in OCC? I think that's almost a garuntee that we'll see the Viewtiful fools with cool powers eventually. Maybe he'll get a Henshin Outfit. O-O that would be humorous. Note: I believe that Voomerang would come with the watch.
EDIT: AGH! Nobody ever responds to my posts... Wah...
Anomaly

Well, let's review what we know Gamer has so far. In the story, he's gained:
Basic: Beam Sword-Bat and Super Scope
Mario: Mario Jump
Sonic: Sonic Run
Proto Man: Proto Shield
Mega Man: Mega Slide
Kirby: Power Copy

And by the time of the comic, we've seen him use...
(not confirmed, but possible) A Street Fighter: Ansatsuken style (uses it to "play mind games" with Sakura, #21)
Donkey Kong: DK Strength (mentioned by Czar, #61)
Viewtiful Joe: V-Watch (#70, using Slow)
Sakura Kasugano: Blooming Cherry Fist, Surge Fist, Vacuum Surge Fist (likely just her general Ansatsuken style, link established in #71)
I may have missed a few.

So, that's what he's got so far, and thus which characters we don't need to worry about.
I've been wondering what he'd gain if he established a link with a Final Fantasy character, though. Their signature weapon would be redundant, since he has his own. I think it'd be either a signature skill, such as Steal, or one of their Limit Breaks (Overdrives, whatever you want to call them.). If so, then the question raises: which Limit Break? Would linking with Cloud Strife give Gamer Braver, Climhazard, or Omnislash? Or would he gain a number of different moves, like he gained Sakura's full move set?
Koji_Tsunami

I bet it would depend what character, but I'd say that for Cloud he'd get the Omnislash, just cause it's so well known...

I wonder how Cap can even get Game Cards from Mega Man and Proto Man, because they're NOT digitally realized. They're robots created by digitally realized people. It would be like getting a power from a car he sees on the street.
Skybait J

Well, they're mostly made of digitally realized parts. Or maybe the Gamer Station is just compadible with thier very high-end technology. <.<
Anomaly

Koji_Tsunami wrote:

Actually, by that point, Mega Man was Realized. Remember they had that system whereby they'd "respawn" him by replacing the deceased version with a clone created purely through Digital Reality, with fully updated-via-satellite programming?
Though, how he could get the Proto Shield is in question. Maybe the operational thing isn't actually whether the being is Digitally Realized, but if they're a game character, one way or another?

Which begs the question, to my warped mind at least: would Gamers be able to link with each other, and thus gain each others' Game Cards? Or would each Gamer have to individually link with the game characters?

Gah, for every answer - and half-answered question - I get two more questions. Like some kind of question-asking hydra.
Koji_Tsunami

Well, If Mega Man was made of digitally realized parts, then it might work.

As for Anomaly's 2nd question...I don't think so, because assuming that
Mega Man and Proto Man are made with digitally realized parts, Gamer Stations can so far only make Game Cards for Digitally realized people.
Skybait J

Hey, Gamers can probably trade Game Cards like you trade yugioh cards or something. Or shareware. XD But if they can copy eachother's cards to make new cards is yet to be seen, but if the Gamer Station is really like a computer, they could copy the program from one card and put it on to another blank card, right?
Koji_Tsunami

In theory, you would be able to do either of those things.
If Cap ever posts in this darn thread, we'll find out. But it would no doubt make to much sense to not just leave us wondering, so we probably just have to assume one or the other.
I think it would work.
Captain Gamer

On the topic of Mega Man, remember that Captain helped Proto Man write out code that, when Jordan plugged it into Mega Man, released him from Wily's control and at the same time set it up so that Mega Man could link, and would result in the bomb linked to him becoming a dud.

Thus, even if it turns out that Mega Man and his spare bodies are no parts digital reality, the additional code makes it so he could link. Does that mean that links could happen with anything, or is it just beings with discernable coding, like DR beings and robots, or just DR beings?

I "dunno."
Koji_Tsunami

How do you "dunno"?
You made up this whole universe,
so I'd think that means you get to play
god with it and just say whatever you want.
(As long as it keeps us interested, of course...)
Anomaly

I think he "dunno"s because he does know, and just isn't going to tell us.
Konoko

Just like I "know" exactly what is going to happen next in the story. =D
Chocolate Ninja

I think that it essentially said in the rules for this section that questions directed towards Gamer will be met with a sidestep. XD
Koji_Tsunami

I was expecting said sidestep anyway.
Actually what I expected was no answer at all.

*sigh* Oh well.
Anomaly

I've just come up with a couple of questions about the Gamer Station, and Game Cards.
The Cards first. Does a weapon Card - such as, say, the Beam Sword - only give Gamer the weapon, or does it give him some level of proficiency with it as well? (After all, it wouldn't be very useful to link the whip from that guy from Castlevania if you're just going to end up wrapping it around your ankle all the time.)
Now the Station. The Captain's Station has a Reset function, which mostly seems to deal with collateral damage. Is that the extent of the meta-game functions of the Gamer Station? Or would it be possible for such functions as Pause, Save/Load Game, or even *gasp* Extra Life to exist?
Koji_Tsunami

I think extra lives a just a gameplay element, and it wouldn't do anything if he could pause, except give him time to think. I think he probably either gain knowledge on using a weapon, or Cap just fight like a punk, which means he hits people with a beam sword the same way he'd just hit some guy with a baseball bat.
Konoko

Reset is a slightly different sort of thing to Pause, Load/Save and Extra Lives, in that reset tends to be a function of the console, not the game. Course, that train of thought brings to mind the devastating possibility of Power On/Off. Shocked
...Nah, I'm pretty sure thats not gonna be there. xP

Quote:

I dunno, I'd have thought he'd fight more like an amateur with images of martial arts/superhero/game fights in his head if he got no proficiency. Although, now I think of it, when it appears even in games, the beam swords general use doesn't really show much difference between finesse and batting.
Anomaly

Konoko wrote:

I don't think so. That kind of thing might work against run-of-the-mill criminals (not that the Captain ever really seems to fight any), but against a robot built with supersonic speed and programmed to fight? Not likely.
Koji_Tsunami

Yeah, maybe Cap has some prior experiance with fighting outside of the video games anyway. It's possible, considering how he beat a certain Miss Kasugano in OCC.
Anomaly

That wouldn't necessarily be prior experience, though - OoC is set some time after the current stage of Digital Defender, after all. The Captain could have had some kind of combat training in the meantime.
Koji_Tsunami

Guess he could have. Forgot about that.

In that case, I don't know what to say about Cap's fighting abilities.
Konoko

Quote:

True...on the other hand, looking at Mecha sonic in the games and considering the amount of times he's been fought against...sure, a fair few things about those fights are due to gameplay mechanics, but its hard to draw the line at how many of those would still be accurate for the one in the story. Often in the games, although Sonic CAN travel extremely fast, the battles are often not even close to that sort of speed.
Maybe its partly the way I described, along very quick reflexes, good hand-eye coordination and able to deal with sharp learning curves...those sorta qualities sound like they'd fit for a Gamer. :p Although, yes, he could easily have gotten some basic training, or intuitive knowledge too, but it really is hard to say and it could easily lie somewhere between the various points.
Koji_Tsunami

One thing I hate about the Sonic the Hedgehog games is that Sonic does have a very high top seed, but but he is hardly "The Fastest Thing Alive".

AS for Cap, I like that hand-eye coordination theory, but I still wonder how that would translate from knowing which buttons to push in a high speed PS2 game, to being in a fast-paced, life threatening battle.
Anomaly

Good point, Koji. After all, gaming reflexes only really apply to things, such as games, which only actually require you to move your hands and fingers a short difference - between the buttons on a gamepad, or the keys on a keyboard. In a real-life fight, you're moving your whole body, often all at once. Quick thumbs aren't exactly going to help you there.

Oh, and to revisit your previous comment about the Captain beating Sakura in OoC - I just thought I'd mention that it has been revealed in the comic since then that he'd Linked with Ryu and gained his specific form of Ansatsuken, so it could be that he'd slotted in that Card, and then freshened it up a bit with some more Sakura-esque mannerisms to play with her head a little.

Speaking of recent revelations, in Chapter 6, the Captain mentions Mario Jump having a "cooldown time". Does this cooldown apply to all Game Cards, or just some? Of course, the cooldown could have just been thrown in as an excuse to have the Captain go tree-swinging.

On another note. While the Gamer Station does seem to be designed for Linking with game characters, what we've actually seen is Linking with Digitally Realized beings, or those with a strong link to Digitally Realized beings (ie, Proto and Mega Man, who, despite technically not being DR themselves, were still designed and built by Wily and Light). Could this mean that, should Digital Reality be used to create something other than a video game character, a Gamer Station would still be able to establish a Link? Something to think about, there.
Koji_Tsunami

Wait, we know Cap didn't use Ankatsuken(or whatever) in that fight, because in the most recent OCC, we do see him use it, and his outfit changes.

And also, I don't see any reason why if There was a Digitall Reality comic character, or anime character, or somthing, why Cap wouldn't be able to get a Game Card for that.
Anomaly

Although he would likely have to call it an "Anime Card" or "Comic Card" or some such. Of course, this is all a moot point, as the author has stated that he'll only be using game characters in the stories, and there will be no chapters based on character from other media.

Also, you'll notice that in the last OOC comic, the Captain didn't just activate Ryu Ansatsuken, he also activated Mega Man's "Power Swap". It was that which caused the outfit change; logically, if he activated the Ansatsuken card on its own, it would cause no such outfit change.
Skybait J

....So THAT'S what happened. I never quite understood what was going on there.... >.>

I'm going to go with he didn't have the Atsuken slotted in, because he didnt seem to put any card in and would've had to have it slotted in for a period of time, also anticipating that Sakura would fight him.
Konoko

I'd figure that by just playing the games with enough dedication, you'd get a rough idea of the Anketsuken style in your head, combined with being around for the street fighter tournement they were all realized for (perhaps seeing Sakura fight then too), along with the way he tends to just go for something and seems to be in at least somewhat reasonable shape...how he got the mario jump for instance, I don't think its too inplausable that he really was just doing it as he went, and tossed in some mimicry of her moves, from the games or otherwise, when he wanted to mess with her head.
Either way, following few strips could be interesting. :3
"Lets Go Justin!"...I mean, Sakura!
:p Cap Full Parrys. *Flrrd*

I'm sure you've noticed, however, that if Mega Man uses a Power Swap he doesn't change his outfit, just the color of his armor, which applies to Mega Man X as well. And how did Cap even get that Card? Didn't he get "Mega Slide" from Mega Man?
Anomaly

Hey, man, all I know is the Captain called out "Power Copy!" before calling out "Ryu Ansetsuken! [sic]", and that there were pictures of Mega Man and Ryu in the background. I'm not the author.
Konoko

During chapter 6, closer to the end, after the warp star testing, Dr Light mentions about how the Megaman he built was designed with very specific copy abilities, with preprogrammed backups of the other original robot masters and was thus later inspired by seeing Kirbys abilities, along with noting the other megaman games, to want to put a similarly fluid power copying system into megaman.
So, not suprising that Cap didn't get the power copy before, since Megaman himself didn't have it at the time. So, I guess that means megaman gets rebuilt or upgraded with that ability and that at sometime, Cap gets another game card from Megaman.

...<.< Also, I'm glad I went back and looked up that stuff, since the mention of a more conventional fuel burning spaceship, but still following a videogame theme...although first thoughts might be Gradius, in light of the new chapters name, that is so totally going to be Samus's ship. :3
Anomaly

Ahh. Very good point, Konoko. I'd forgotten about that. So, if that's the case, it appears that the Gamer Station can establish multiple Links with a single character, provided that character is altered somehow in between times. Though, that raises the question of what happens to the previously-gained Cards. Are they kept alongside the new? Or do they vanish, as if they are "upgraded" into the new Card - in other words, does the Captain have both Mega Slide and Power Copy in his inventory, or is he limited to Power Copy now?

Also, my first thoughts were actually on Star Fox.
Skybait J

Well, the Megaman power copy is different from the Kirby power copy. With Kirby power copy, you actually need a physical object to become the elemental power. With Megaman power copy...it seems to work with the game cards themselves...for a costume change. =/
Anomaly

Well, that's just what we've seen of it so far, though that is fitting based on Mega Man's own colour-changing during the games. Perhaps it could work with more than Game Cards - could the Captain, for example, Copy an enemy for a quick disguise, and then infiltrate?

Which reminds me of something. Who here thinks that, if the Captain managed to Link with Solid Snake, he'd get a cardboard box?
Skybait J

A carboard box with blue stripes and a "CG" logo Razz
Konoko

Don't forget the mullet.
And CQC. NEVER forget the CQC.
<.< How often did they talk about CQC in the metal gear series anyway? I've only played a small bit of it and it seemed to come up a lot...
Majin Luigi

The Mullet? I cannot imagine any reason why Captain Gamer would obtain the "Snake Mullet" Game Card. It would be even more useless than a cardboard box.
Skybait J

It's like, headgear! Or a disguise! >.>
Konoko

Maybe it would grant him knowledge of close quarter combat via the hair fibres interfacing with his brain. :3
Interfacing digitally.
And comes complete with the bandana.

Konoko wrote:

I don't think that'd be too useful. I mean, the Super Scope seems to already have infinite ammo.

Majin Luigi wrote:

What do you mean, 'useless'?

"I'm not exaggerating when I say the success of your mission hinges on how you use that cardboard box."

If the Captain's going to use the "super power of teamwork" line from Sonic Heroes, then I expect him to whip out that one for a Metal Gear chapter.
Koji_Tsunami

I think that while  a cardboard box can be used as a stealth item, I can't thik of any of Cap's antagonist's being dumb enough to fall for it.
Eggman:Hey Al, there's a cardboard box moving across the floor. Don't you think we should o somthing about that?
Wily:Nah, We'll just let the obvious threat to the [evil guy] remain undeteceted.

See the problem?
Anomaly

No, that's not how it works at all. People don't see the box moving. They just turn around - oh, it's just a cardboard box. Nothing to worry about. Turn back. Turn around again - oh, it's just a cardboard box. And they still don't worry about it, even though it's moved a few yards closer to them.

So, they don't actually see the box moving, because it happens while they're not looking. Like Daniel Hammer's teleportation.
Koji_Tsunami

I've never played Metal Gear, so I don't know if the game is programmed so nobody sees the box, but in a more realistic world, people would see it at some point or another.
