Super Mario Bros. Galaxy

What do you think of the new Super Mario Bros. Galaxy? Will it be better than old Super Mario Bros. games, worse, or the same?

Personally, I think it'll be a cool game and all, but too far away from the classic Sumer Mario Bros. games. Travelling the galaxy? I liked good old Mushroom Kingdom.
Skybait J

Can I have a link to a site or something please? Pleeease? Or a release date?
firemastrr

Try This.

Sorry about that.
Koji_Tsunami

I am looking forward to it. The gsme won'talways look like Star Wars, y'know. Much of it will take place on planets, which happen to have blue skys, white clouds, ect. I'm sure at least one of these will be Mushroom Kingdom.

Sadly, Mario games seem to have almost no coherent timeline (via magic reset button), so I don't know when Galaxy will place.
firemastrr

Yes, but that's partly my point. One of the planets. There are gonna be a ton of them. It is better than nothing, but I think that it's gonna be really weird. Also, from the screenshots, some of the planets will be like the size of a bowling ball. What's the point of that? It is a new idea, but I still think that it's gonna be kinda strange.
Koji_Tsunami

That is the point. It is new.
You're the one who keeps saying that Nintendo takes risk that pay off.

And I doubt that any of them will be the size of a bowling ball.
They should all be at least the size of a small house. Razz
Skybait J

....A planet the size of a bowling ball would be awesome, though! ;o;
Koji_Tsunami

I don't think it would qualify as a planet if it were that small. Otherwise, I'd agree with you.
firemastrr

Well, in that case, none of them would be large enough to consider planets, because the hypocritical idiots at the IAU decided that we needed 8 planets instead of nine, and coined the term "dwarf planet" to refer to anything from the size of Pluto to the size of a marble. I consider them all planets in Galaxy.

There are 9 planets in the Solar System, people! Mad
Koji_Tsunami

no, no no. All the planets might seem small, but if they have an atmosphere, I'd say that they're probably in the general size range of Earth. You can't necessarily go every place on the planet, but that doen't mean they're that small. And also, I'm not talking "dwarf planet", I mean like "floating large rock". Even though I disagree with you about the nine planets thing.
Captain Gamer

Easy, there. >.>

If anything, every mass would be referred to by name rather than deal with the technicalities, kind of how it was handled in Kirby Superstar.
firemastrr

Captain's right, they'll just deal with the names, I'm sure.

If all the planets are the same size as Earth, then how do you explain the screenshots where he is walking along the surface of the planet, but the planet is small enough that he can walk around it in about a minute. I doubt he would get that big. I agree with you, though, about the part where you said that he just doesn't go everywhere on the planet. It's the logical explanation and it makes the most sense.
Koji_Tsunami

those balls floating in space you can wlak around in under 15 seconds are things I don't consider planet. I thought I said that already! Mad
Skybait J

Y'know....technically planets that small could not be round at all. They'd be more oval.
Konoko

Oh? Widening around the equator?
Koji_Tsunami

Skybait: That's right. But since Nintendo obviously didn't know that, we have tiny, round, space-rocks.

Konoko: You don't get a response. Twisted Evil

No...They'd just be irregularly shaped. The reason that planets are spherical is because their gravity was strong enough to pull all of the matter making up the planet into a tight sphere. Asteroids and the like are just chunks because their gravitational pull is to weak for this. This is one of the criteria for planets that the AIU used, and it's one part that I think they hit dead on.

And, technically, there would really be no equator. The equator divides Earth in half, but it's defined as where the Sun hits the surface the most directly. Since most of these small celestial bodies are too small to have a regular orbit or rotation, it would be imopossible to draw a specific equator. Even if you could, there would be no widening around it because of the irregular rotation.

Oh, sorry if I sounded like a know-it-all here. I couldn't help it. Smile
Konoko

I learned something! Surprised
Koji_Tsunami

I think I'll bring this conversation back to Mario now.
Does anyone know If Luigi will be in "Galaxy"? Or Wario?

So my whole post wasn't a complete waste! Yay! Very Happy

Aww, but we were having so much fun...

But anyway, I wouldn't be surprised if either one of them showed up in the game at some point (especially Luigi), but I doubt they will be playable. It's just kind of tradition that these games have only the title character playable, and I just can't envision either one as a big character. The whole storyline is Mario in space, away frome home, which makes it hard for a character to just pop up. I haven't seen anyone other than Mario in the screenshots that I've looked at, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything. I don't know for sure, though. This is all speculation. Razz

The equater is defined by the spin of the object in question, and its the central line between the two poles. If the object has no rotation, then theres no equator.

And besides that, the sun only hits the equator directly on the spring and fall equanoxes =/

So I stand corrected. Thank you. Either way, my resoning still stands that there would be no regular equator.

But I think we've made our point. Let's try to get back to Galaxy. Smile

But... this isn't the Brawl thread. This is the Galaxy thread. If we were to start talking about Brawl here, it'd be even more horrendously off-topic than it already is.
Skybait J

Heres some on topic for you!

I watched the demos for it and I've offically decided to buy it when it comes out!

*checks bank account* Only $800?! why did I buy all those DS games?! Whyyyyyy?

Oops...Heh Heh...Fixed that... Embarassed Sorry.
Koji_Tsunami

Well, I think that It would be really cool to even see Luigi. He wasn't in Mario 64, you know. Was he in Sunshine? If he was, I bet that'd increase his chances of being in "Galaxy".
Konoko

Despite some persistant fake rumours to the contrary back then. 'Press the L button 64 times while standing on the roof' 'do a precise backflip then reverse triple jump, from this spot, in the mirror room'. Lawl.

I know he wasn't playable, dunno about not in. I still think he will be in galaxy.

Googling about on this matter though, was not without its worrying side stops.
Skybait J

Aug! Super Mario Galaxy comes out next week! OoO

....

Crap! I seriously am running out of money here! "Stop buying so many DS games, Jj!" "But Phoenix Wright...!" "Wrong! No more games for you...Except Wii games!" Sooooo expensive....
Skybait J

So....has anyone gotten the game yet? Huh? Huh? Huh? >.> <.<

I'm getting it...soon...no place in the area had a midnight release though...can I still call myself a casual gamer if I consider going to a midnight release...?
Konoko

I haven't even gotten round to getting the console yet. :p
I'm pretty sure how casual someone is can't solely be judged off stuff like that. I'm pretty sure I'm not very casual about my gaming but at the same time I've never been around for a release and always buy my games a while after they've been out. Mostly due to the money and catching up with games from a while back. Rolling Eyes
Anomaly

Sorry, Skybait, can't say I have. Though, that might have a little to do with how it's not released here for another dozen days, and a little bit more to do with the fact that most of my funds are tied up with buying Christmas presents this time of year. But, rest assured, we will get it, and when we do, we'll let you know. Provided, of course, that you haven't already bought it and seen for yourself.

Get. The. Console.

Anyway, I'm having trouble getting the money too. Lawns aren't growing as much now that it's considerably colder, and I need my last $50 for Brawl. I'll see how much I have, though, and if possible, I'll tell you tomorrow how excellent it is. Cross your fingers!
Skybait J

I've got the game now, but I havnt played it much since my sister's obsessed with Wind Waker and refuses to use the Gamecube...

What I have played has definitly been fun, though these early levels are kinda easy XD There's also a definite lack of storyline...I like storylines....>.>
firemastrr

I got the game this morning. It's great. I can't put it down, except to keep my promise to you guys and tell you about it.

First, it has the best graphics of any Wii game I've played. It's beautiful. The controls are designed well, but the whole planet concept takes awhile to get used to. It's done very well, but it gave me headaches (literally and figuratively) for the first half hour of play. It can be hard to get used to the attacks and the whole "where things are" concept. You can have a friend pick up a second Wii Remote (without the Nunchuck; P1 prquires one) and assist in the collection of items and the stunning of enemies. It sounds kind of disappointing as 2 player, but the whole story mode is great. Which leads me to Sky's complaint on storyline. It's the same as all the other Super Mario Bros. games. Bowser abducts Peach, you gotta save her. This time, however, you travel the galaxy doing it. I won't go into a ton of detail, I'll just wait for the rest of you to buy it. All in all, though, it's a great game.

Oh, and Luigi's in the game, I think. He was mentioned in passing by a Toad, who said something like "We got stranded with Luigi" or something. I'll find out as I continue in the game.
Skybait J

Luigi's supposed to be some sort of unlockable bonus...

And I know traditionally Mario games dont have much story...I just favor video games that do XD
Majin Luigi

Well, it is my opinion that if it doesn't have Luigi, I don't intend to get it.

EDIT: You can be have Luigi. I just found out.
Koji_Tsunami

Luigi? Playable?

Awesome!

It'll have to be after christmas, if only because of all expenses that comes from a large family, but eh, I'm definately planning to get it. Just not right away. xP;; I know I'm not the only one in the family eying up the Wii speculatively though, so I'm likely to still get a chance to play, one way or the other.

As for storyline...heh, not too suprising it'd be along the familiar lines, it is sorta a near-constant for him. Even the ones with differing storylines, which tended to be the RPG based ones, weren't exactly machiavellian in their kidnap stories. I'd figure it'd be the details and incidental characters you happen to meet that could make it interesting.
Skybait J

Yep, definitly a Luigi, and not just as an unlockable bonus. He finds extra stars for you once you free him from the Haunted Mansion....of evil! OoO
Koji_Tsunami

How does the Green Plumber manage to get into Haunted Places all the time again? Do ghosts just like to scare him or somthing?
Question: Why "....of evil! OoO"?
Anomaly

Well, it could have been the Haunted Mansion... of sugar, spice, and everything nice, with the only ghosts being cute, fluffy bunnies, and chirping birds.
Skybait J

There are cute fluffy bunnies all over the place in this game...

They scare me more than the Boos...save me from thier fluffy evil! *flees*
Anomaly

*interposes himself between Skybait and the bunnies* Fear not, Skybait, this is my specialty! Have at thee!

But, that's enough off-topic-ness. Have you had much chance to try out the multiplayer? "Co-Star Mode", isn't it? I've heard a little about it, and it sounds like it'd be perfect for my brother and his fiance.
firemastrr

(Hi, guys.  I'm back form my odyssey.  I was...um...sleeping.  Yeah.  That's it.)

First off, after you beat Galaxy with Mario, you can go through the whole thing (as in the entire game) again, though this time with Luigi.  As Mario, he only gets you like three stars, it's almost a joke.  It's kinda fun to play as him though.  Co-Star Mode is basically a joke as well.  It'sn a lame excuse for two player mode, with your friend grabbing another Wiimote and collecting star bits, making you jump, and freezing enemies.  It gets old reletively quickly, except for some parts of the game where it makes the level a lot easier.
