Theological/Political Threads- Yay or Nay?

Theological, philosophical and political discussions can be a fun way to sharpen debate skills and gain insight. They have also been known to create some of the biggest flame wars known to mankind. We've already skimmed the surface of these sorts of things before (though I'm not sure whether scientific or social issues should be called political, apparently they are), so we might as well take a vote. Can we handle these topics courteously and in the spirit of good debate, if they are created? Are we bad enough dudes (or dudettes)?
firemastrr

Oh goody, a new topic!

Anyway, I don't mind the discussions. If they are intelligent and meaningful, I like them a lot. However, they aren't always that good. I'm with the Ninja on this one. I'd enjoy it if we can handle it, and I know I can.

Edit: Also, this community is so small that it will be relatively easy to keep each other in check. I doubt that we'll have many problems, and if we do, it will be easy enough to put an end to it. Besides, we're all friends here.
Chocolate Ninja

True! Or if not friends yet, acquaintances who seem to get along pretty nicely. Razz Right now votes seem to be a resounding yes, but there are still a good 12 or so votes left to count.
firemastrr

Personally, I think we can handle it. And no way are you going to get all the votes, you would have to wait months. I say if you get like 7 or 8 total, it's a majority. Half of the people don't post anyway, and if it's a problem, like I said, we should be able to handle it.
Skybait J

I like good discussions about this sort of thing, but it's like gasoline. Sure, it runs stuff pretty well, but it's HIGHLY FLAMMABLE! I know I can get emotional fast one some things, and on others, not.

Politics and religions are good discussion points, but they must be handled with great care...and you cant really trust people to be carefull at all times.
Onasaki

I don't think it's a good idea. We're a gaming forum. Not a relgious fanatical-Political forum.

I'd stand at the arguement, that Bush is a feckin' ijit. And nothing will change my mind.

So, I say Nay.
Skybait J

Then I'd counter your remark with a heated list of political slop and basically slap you and say "ignorance bad!"

See? not even a political thread yet and I'm getting mad at people.

ALL FEAR GASOLINE!
Captain Gamer

I very much support political/theological threads, because even though this is a gaming forum, gaming is the adhesive. One's primary identity does not make up the whole. Like said before, this is the off-topic forum where everything unrelated goes.

The thing is, in such threads, the "Canden Grisam stipulation" will be well enforced. The stipulation is summed in three simple words:

Keep. It. Civil.

No exceptions. Harsh and insulting language must be curbed because there is ALWAYS another way to say something. If you're passionate about the discussion, type out what you want to say, hit preview, then look it over and edit as necessary. You know which words of your post are questionable, and I'm giving everybody who registers on this forum the benefit of a doubt that they can use such tact.

Please note that the administators and future moderators would never take action to silence the voices of dissent. Only the method of debate will be monitored. I don't want to have to do more than give a quick nudge and 'psst!' or slap on the wrist.

It doesn't have to be stiff and excessively formal. I don't expect everybody to fit on monacles, sip tea, and speak in thick british accents, I simply want the debate to remain focused on the issue and not on unbased personal jabs with "NO U" cycling. If you cannot debate without resorting to such, this is but one forum in the wide, wide internet. Your methods of debate can be taken elsewhere, but don't be discouraged from joining in on other discussions that won't flare up your emotions.
Chocolate Ninja

Hmm, Skybait does bring up a good point. So, which topics get you people riled up? Razz I'm up for pretty much anything, though I'm sure I might unintentionally rile people up with my arguments.
Skybait J

Just when people are grossly underinformed, and yet try to argue a point. Hell, it ticks me off when I try to do that. XD Most common topics for the highly biased and ignorant are War in Iraq and Global Warming, so those tend to piss me off the most...I suppose
Anomaly

Eh, not much gets me riled, but it does kind of irritate me (understatement) when people try to claim things like "God is just a kid with a magnifying glass in an alternate universe" and other things in that vein. And even then, I still have two other layers of subconscious watching my every move, which aren't afraid to give me grief over it... transliminality for the win.

I guess it boils down to what mood I'm in at the time. If I'm in a passionate, emotional mood, I might be a bit harder to keep in check then when I'm in a cold, logical mood.

edit: I claim this page for the Order of the Caretaker! Sera ac clavis!

What Cap said. And I'd be mad at him for saying that except it's his forum. So it's all cool. We can handle it. Prob'ly.

Er... why would you be mad that I said that?

Let's just say that he'd be the first killed for rebellion in a colony.

Anyway, I really don't get riled up too much. I just like a good argument. (I don't lose arguments. Heh heh.) Like I said before. Keep it intelligent, factual, and informed, and we'll all have fun with it. If you fell uncomfortable, just avoid those threads. No one's making you look at them and post in them.

I say, go for it.
