Why No Captain Gamer RP?

If this is the Captain Gamer Forums, why don't we have a Captain Gamer Roleplay? XD I had three ideas how that could work with. Just ideas. Havnt played enough forum RP's to really get into which rules would suit which.

First one, just have a plain Captain Gamer Round Robin Fanfic. Preferably a humorous one...

Second one, a forum RP where everyone has the same powers as Gamer.

Last one, a forum RP that just takes place in the Captain Gamer universe, so people could be a game charactor, a Gamer fanboy, an IDR scientist, ect.

Those who've played more RP's than me, which kind to which rules would be the best? Pitch in a few ideas of your own, if you want...<.<
Konoko

The last one, although it sounds a good idea, would need something to bring all those together, something overarching and big, and some of those characters would have smaller scope for events than others. The second one, could be interesting, although the powers are kinda vaguely defined, and things could get a little godmodey. Course, if we all picked videogame characters and Cap picked Cap...XD
Cap would not need to be a truly main character with that, considering it all sort of an offshoot of the main events, a bunch of realized characters dealing with issues elsewhere, him dropping in now and then...*shrug*

The first suggestion, its funny, but I had a similar idea, although thats less in the terms of RP and more in the sense of a collaborative wiki-novel sort of thing. Definately could be fun too, although I can't help but wonder if that should be seperate to the RP suggestion.
Chocolate Ninja

Hmm, yeah, there is the problem of too wide a scope. In order for an RP to work characters need to interact with each other, almost constantly. Razz Not necessarily everyone with everyone, but at the very least groups of two to three people interacting on a constant basis. Which is a problem all RPs face, but especially ones with as wide a scope as a CG RP.

Of course, having multiple characters does help pick up the slack.
Koji_Tsunami

And, of course, there's the issue of nobody wants to be an IDR worker. Everyone want's to be a Game character, except for Captain Gamer himself, who gets to be Captain Gamer. But a round robin might work...
Konoko

Well, everyone being a game character could work out ok, just gotta have at least an equal amount of villains to match and something strong that'd be almost a match for everyone.

I guess we could start brainstorming ways to narrow down the scope, giving a specific storyline and flow that would keep things together somewhat.
Perhaps something along the lines of an digital realm being made, but not by IDR, and loads of characters being drawn there, or just going there to check it out/be heroes/accident/eat. Or some sort of disaster, city getting shut down/enclosed....
Hopefully the general gist of the suggestion is clear. xP

Oh, and if people were using characters, I guess certain restrictions would have to be worked out. For instance, following Caps examples in the story, although you're not literally restricted to what the characters do, such as being able to eat a snowball to get a power, not just an enemy, but still in general sticking closely to displayed powers. And of course, in the case of, say, Samus or Link, it'd be before she gets ALL her stuff/restricted to one game and so forth. Just to keep things reasonable. =3
Onasaki

How about, A STAR WARS ROLEPLAY!!!!! Or um um um...Um....Superheros. Or Warcraft? Or Starcraft? Or Chicken! No Purple! Wait wait Orange! Yellow! Green? Aardvark! Chinchilla!!!! CHOCOLATE CHIP!!!! What about cheese?! I Like cheese. Do you like cheese? I want some Waffles. What were we talking about?

INSANE ASYLUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Edit by Captain Gamer -- Bad Onasaki! Not on the rug!

Since those suggestions at the start weren't a product of genuine interest, I can hardly call them a saving grace.

It's not spam. It's random things. I was making a point. >.> Also, those were of interest. I would like to see a Star Wars Warcraft/Starcraft/Superheros RP. I would also like an Insane Asylum RP.
Koji_Tsunami

What about a multiple Gamers RP? Like there's Captain Gamer as himself, but then we other people could be Non-canon Gamers, like there could be Commadore Gamer, and a Cadet Gamer or...
Of course, if Cap vetos this, forget it. (I don't expect people will like the idea anyway.)
Captain Gamer

I believe that the one flaw in a Captain Gamer roleplay is that Digital Defender is only 5.2 episodes in, so the Gamerverse (patent pending) is not so fully fleshed out. I blame the author.

If somebody could piece something together from info released in OOC, that would be something. I think I would end up being tyrannical if I made it myself. If another person made it, all I would be inclined to do is give a nudge whenever the Captain Gamer canon is compromised.

Also, the idea of additional "C____ Gamer" characters is actually encouraged! Though there are two yet-to-be-heard ones that will be canon in the near future, and therefore unadvisable for an OC. Koji, I've reversed my earlier ruling on giving their names away. Feel free to add them to the rampant speculation. I was just being silly... new forum, and all.
Konoko

Perhaps something with the choice of either gamer characters or game characters, so its a bit of a mix. That could encourage some teamwork, just like in DD. Whatever we pick, we should probably just pick it and go for it. I'm eager to start considering character details and considering overarching plot. X3

*wanders off to reread OOC a couple times*
Skybait J

Yeah, I like that idea, Konoko, lets just hope not everyone decides to become a Gamer. Razz

So, how about I throw out a more solid RP pitch? I'm not quite sure about the story. Either we can take off of DD, where video game villains are threatening the world, or we can combine this with the "other rp" and make a sort of great race set up to see "who's the ultimate Game Master" or something. Or have that be set up by the villains. Every gamer race to get itemX for the future of the planet! Or something XD

---A DM like our current RP, but maybe more stat-based thing with that DnD dice roller thing. If we cant find that forum roller, we might have to go by the honor of the Gamer, right? Razz
---If you're a C. Gamer, you start with limited amounts of powers, let's say three or so.
---If you're a Game Charactor, you're recently realized, but for the most part you have all your powers. Weapons do not count as powers, and you get a limited amount of those. So Megaman does not get EVERY boss power, and Duke Nukem does not get EVERY gun. But they may have a select few. Probably the same with Gamer, three or so weapons.
Chocolate Ninja

Ha, I wouldn't go for being a C. Gamer. Razz It's not the importance of the character, it's how you use it! Or something.

While the "there can be only one" idea sounds interesting, the villain-of-the-week thing could work just as well. That last one might get tiresome, though. I think the first one has more of an opportunity for interaction and conflict, which are always good to have in an RP.
Koji_Tsunami

Chocolate Ninja wrote:

What? That didn't even make sense. Mind explaining, Chocolate Ninja?
Chocolate Ninja

What I meant was basically, no matter how strong or seemingly important your character is, as long as you roleplay well it doesn't really matter. Razz In fact, the more important/powerful your character is the worse it is if you roleplay poorly.
Konoko

Definately agreed. =3
I generally actually come up with relatively weak characters, since I prefer them. xP I'm pretty strongly against overpowered characters. I recall a legacy of Kain RP I got involved in, which had one player as pseudo-vampire wraith with the ability to traverse into the spirit realm when his material body was badly damaged and return fully healed with a new body. (based on Raziel, somewhat), and another with half demon blood and fairly flashy skills...let alone the various pillar guardian characters...my character had a bow and was a pretty good shot. That was about it. xP
I ended up shooting the vampire wraith guy through the eye later on, after he wrote himself into a corner with his freaky monster. And the other guy...was not a great roleplayer...the choice of character itself could be considered a sign of such, since it was hardly the most creative seeming thing, with the generic shounen anime style to the skills and such. Lead to some behind the scene arguments about what his character should be able to do. xP;;
ended well though. After there was a big thing, with a villain that was made to be overpowered and not defeated by the player characters when he still gave a good shot and it was agreed that character should be retired, he ended up getting somewhat depowered in the story, then killed by a falling brick that someone else entirely had happened to mention in their post, just as a bit of description padding. Pretty funny, in retrospect.
</half offtopic story>

So, yeah, less 'uber' characters, definately where its at. =p
I'll probably pick a game character myself...*goes off to consider options* x3
Koji_Tsunami

Well, what makes a character über? Just being a godmoder with almost infinite powers? Oris there somthing more to being über than having an all powerful guy? I'm sorta new to RPs, and wanted to avoid RPiing badly, so I was thinking maybe someone here could define terms?
Chocolate Ninja

Well, uber is part in the powers, part in the attitude. Razz And those depend on the RP. For instance, if you're in an RP where everyone is uber, then it would get very frustrating if you played a much less uber character. An RP where everyone has uber powers can still be good as long as they roleplay WELL, but an RP with a few uber characters who act uber ("CRAWLING IN MY SKIN", my power is so powerful that no one can defeat me, why must I suffer the curse of being so gosh darned goodlooking) can ruin the RP for everyone else.
Koji_Tsunami

So, to use sprite comic terms, "totally l33t author who defeats Megaman and Protoman with ease just to show he can and then complains about how hard it is to be awesome"= Bad Uber?
Chocolate Ninja

Exactly! It's kind of in the same vein as Mary-Sue and Uber-Self-Insert.
Koji_Tsunami

Oh! I see. Wish I'd had the insight to grasp those similarities sooner.
Konoko

Yep. The guideline I generally use is that the characters can certainly have all manner of things, but the players should all be about even, so that it depends on the writing, creative skill and how the type of abilities match up to the other in a more tactical way, if ever they matched up.

As an example, one character may have created one thats rather skinny and quick, flexible, with a ranged attack. Matched up against a large brute with an axe, although they are very different, it should be a close fight with even people, based on the big guy bullrushing in through the hits, swinging in ways that corner the other guy a bit and cause him to take a very powerful hit. The small guy, obviously, should not be able to take much of such and would be rather slowed down after it, but equally, the big guy couldn't dodge and would be worn down rapidly....depending on context, terrain and writing skill, it should be able to go either way. Hopefully that example actually helped rather than just confusing things. XP

Plus, I should note, that guideline has the problem in that it doesn't allow for someone making a comically weak character that shouldn't fight anyway. It also should be mentioned that villains can totally be Mary-Sues, and require the super power of teamwork to overcome. Yeah, I totally said that.
Chocolate Ninja

Konoko wrote:

Though it's still probably a good idea to avoid the Mary-Sue attitude, even then. Well, unless played up comically ("Curse my dashing good looks, huge harem of fangirls, multibilliondollar corporation, and my completely unparalleled power! Why can I not be a regular joe with villainous aspirations! Nay, it is my curse, the cross I must needs bear. Woe is me." "...are you serious?" "Of course not, you dolt!")
Koji_Tsunami

WELL, the villain should at least be stronger than the heroes. I mean, imagine playing the Legend of Zelda if Ganon was just a seventeen year old with a sword like Link, of if Darth Vader was only a trainee Jedi, like Luke in Star Wars. It wouldn't work very well.
Konoko

About now is the point to clarify that when I said that, I didn't mean ALL the common traits of a Mary Sue, just a lot. Especially since there is of course the point that they DO have to lose at some point, which isn't really a Mary Sue thing. x3
And it was just a can, I wouldn't put it as a guideline or common idea.
Anomaly

I like the idea of having a world with Game characters and Gamer characters mixed in - I'd like to join in on that if it ever starts up, though I should warn you that I'm not too experienced with RP.
I'd probably make a Gamer, but a severely underpowered one - like, one functioning Game Card slot, which sometimes reduces the power of the Cards put into it (ie, he actually jumps higher if he doesn't put Mario Jump in), though he'd have some comical sidekick-style skills to make up for it... like, he can make a good diversion.
Koji_Tsunami

That's what I meant in the first place, Gamer characters, but not mary-sue-esque ones. And I did mean with game characters too.
Anomaly

Anyway, to revive a dead topic, I think a good Captain Gamer RP would actually be something which revolves around some kind of Gamer Corps - like the Green Lantern Corps, except instead of a ring and lantern, every member is issued a visor (or alternative) and Gamer Station. The Gamers, most of which would be player characters, could spend their time on heroic intervention into situations centered on Digital Reality. As well as the Digital Defender standard storyline of a new game character being Realized, and then a new game villain appearing on the scene and causing havoc, there could be more unusual scenarios, such as the Gamers handling crowd control at an anti-DR riot, or coalitions of already-existing villains, or even some kind of crimefighting not at all related to Digital Reality, as well as whatever drama the characters themselves bring to the party.
Konoko

Gamer Corps, huh. Would that make Czar a rouge? (non-canon/fanon-wise)
Or should be go for Cap Corps and there be the antithesis Czar Corps. :3

I do like the idea of those more unusual scenarios, tossing some fairly idealistic stuff into complicated situations. Even at the best times of crowd control, it only takes the law being reduced to faceless uniforms in the eyes of an agry mob and for someone to panic and make one mistake for everything to explode. Which would be all the worse with some of the powers that could be around. :3
Let alone choosing when to use the powers and when not, what to do when seeing someone else in trouble on the way to something bigger, stuff like that.
Koji_Tsunami

But don't you see? If Captain Gamer was part of a large scale organization, he might fall into the trap of thinking that somethings are more important than others! When President Luthor said that Superman should affiliate himself with the goverment so he could manage his time better, Clark turned him down because if Superman became a goverment agent, he might become a bit of a politicial, less caring about the individual, and more concerned with stopping his enemies at all costs. If that were to happen, the loss of life rate in his battles would rocket from 0% to maybe up to 50% of bystanders! That's why he operates outside the law. And the same applies to Captain Gamer.
Anomaly

...I see.

To be honest, though, the idea of a Gamer Corps. mainly originated from two things: first, there was the idea of a "Colonel Gamer" (it was Colonel, right?), who would likely be above the Captain, and then there was that time in OoC when he received transmissions on his visor from some unknown source, which gave him details of the kidnapping and the status of potential partners. Now, we have to wonder who it was that contacted him - a fellow-Gamer commanding officer, or maybe a character we're all already familiar with from Digital Defender?

On the note of Czar, I was thinking he might be a kind of "renegade" as you suggested, but it's also possible that he is, if not the head ("Czar" is a bit of an ominous title in that respect, isn't it?), then a member of an opposing Corps., which would likely have less Gamers, but also double as the "untold evil" of Digital Defender fame. (Also, out of curiosity, when did it start being called untold evil, and why?)
Skybait J

I coined "Untold Villain" off the top of my head for general speculation. I dont know in partucular why I chose that...but it probably has to do with the fact that Gamer hasnt written (or told) who the true main villain is, or even if there is a true main villain. Or if it's just Czar. The name is open for speculation, u'know? >.>

Or would we prefer to call him a common name? Like Jerry Razz

Jerry...the Unwritten Evil Villain!
Anomaly

Oh, I see. So that's where it came from.
And, *gasp!* I'm a Champion Gamer now! Yippeeee!

Now, back on topic. The Captain Gamer RP. Well, I've probably already said this, but I'm reasonably certain the main reason there is no Captain Gamer RP is because we don't actually know that many hard-and-fast details about Gamer's side of things, and that would be integral to any kind of Gamerverse roleplay. I'm sure that, given time, Digital Defender will give us more info about that, but before then, we'll either have to do without an RP, or suck it up and make up something ridden with fanon.
Konoko

Hehe, congratulations. =3

And yeah, it is a tricky choice. It does sound nice to stick close to the universe, but we'd have to make up stuff that is possibly going to be at odds to later stuff introduced...there are a few ways to go with that and deal with such problems as they come though. Retconning heavily, having a bit of space and plausable room to explain away the differences, such as not showing any of the main universe characters doing anything they haven't before, perhaps not directly showing them much at all, just being more flexible with personal characters, since worst comes to worst, it can be explained as differences between the characters rather than a problem with the fanon.
...that makes sense right? My brain is REALLY tired.

How else would he know about stuff going down before anyone else? Before most of IDR even. <.<

Of course, it could be different people contacting him in DD and OOC =/
Konoko

*coughKATEplzcough*
<.< But, thats really more on topic for the speculation forum, so ignore that and back to considering how to do a flowing RP in a world thats still being revealed to us. :3
