Ha, I wouldn't go for being a C. Gamer. It's not the importance of the character, it's how you use it! Or something.
While the "there can be only one" idea sounds interesting, the villain-of-the-week thing could work just as well. That last one might get tiresome, though. I think the first one has more of an opportunity for interaction and conflict, which are always good to have in an RP. _________________ <Alriik> *changes the channel*

What I meant was basically, no matter how strong or seemingly important your character is, as long as you roleplay well it doesn't really matter. In fact, the more important/powerful your character is the worse it is if you roleplay poorly. _________________ <Alriik> *changes the channel*

Definately agreed. =3
I generally actually come up with relatively weak characters, since I prefer them. xP I'm pretty strongly against overpowered characters. I recall a legacy of Kain RP I got involved in, which had one player as pseudo-vampire wraith with the ability to traverse into the spirit realm when his material body was badly damaged and return fully healed with a new body. (based on Raziel, somewhat), and another with half demon blood and fairly flashy skills...let alone the various pillar guardian characters...my character had a bow and was a pretty good shot. That was about it. xP
I ended up shooting the vampire wraith guy through the eye later on, after he wrote himself into a corner with his freaky monster. And the other guy...was not a great roleplayer...the choice of character itself could be considered a sign of such, since it was hardly the most creative seeming thing, with the generic shounen anime style to the skills and such. Lead to some behind the scene arguments about what his character should be able to do. xP;;
ended well though. After there was a big thing, with a villain that was made to be overpowered and not defeated by the player characters when he still gave a good shot and it was agreed that character should be retired, he ended up getting somewhat depowered in the story, then killed by a falling brick that someone else entirely had happened to mention in their post, just as a bit of description padding. Pretty funny, in retrospect.

So, yeah, less 'uber' characters, definately where its at. =p
I'll probably pick a game character myself...*goes off to consider options* x3

Well, what makes a character über? Just being a godmoder with almost infinite powers? Oris there somthing more to being über than having an all powerful guy? I'm sorta new to RPs, and wanted to avoid RPiing badly, so I was thinking maybe someone here could define terms?
Well, uber is part in the powers, part in the attitude. And those depend on the RP. For instance, if you're in an RP where everyone is uber, then it would get very frustrating if you played a much less uber character. An RP where everyone has uber powers can still be good as long as they roleplay WELL, but an RP with a few uber characters who act uber ("CRAWLING IN MY SKIN", my power is so powerful that no one can defeat me, why must I suffer the curse of being so gosh darned goodlooking) can ruin the RP for everyone else. _________________ <Alriik> *changes the channel*

So, to use sprite comic terms, "totally l33t author who defeats Megaman and Protoman with ease just to show he can and then complains about how hard it is to be awesome"= Bad Uber?
Exactly! It's kind of in the same vein as Mary-Sue and Uber-Self-Insert. _________________ <Alriik> *changes the channel*

Yep. The guideline I generally use is that the characters can certainly have all manner of things, but the players should all be about even, so that it depends on the writing, creative skill and how the type of abilities match up to the other in a more tactical way, if ever they matched up.
As an example, one character may have created one thats rather skinny and quick, flexible, with a ranged attack. Matched up against a large brute with an axe, although they are very different, it should be a close fight with even people, based on the big guy bullrushing in through the hits, swinging in ways that corner the other guy a bit and cause him to take a very powerful hit. The small guy, obviously, should not be able to take much of such and would be rather slowed down after it, but equally, the big guy couldn't dodge and would be worn down rapidly....depending on context, terrain and writing skill, it should be able to go either way. Hopefully that example actually helped rather than just confusing things. XP
Plus, I should note, that guideline has the problem in that it doesn't allow for someone making a comically weak character that shouldn't fight anyway. It also should be mentioned that villains can totally be Mary-Sues, and require the super power of teamwork to overcome. Yeah, I totally said that.
