Now for some raving suited especially for this board, and this thread of this board.
I just got back from watching the movie adaption of Max Payne, and I must say, it is excellent.
However, one thing you must remember before going to see it is that it is an adaption; they did a very good job of adapting it for film, but that also means changes to the original story. Characters have been cut, characters have been changed, plotlines have been merged. But, all of the changes were for the sake of making a better movie, the feel of the games is still present, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
On the acting end of things, Mark Wahlberg is perhaps the perfect choice, and the title character remains the most faithfully adapted of the entire cast. Choices such as Mila Kunis in the part of Mona Sax were perhaps less aligned with the original characters, but still true to the re-imagining in all cases.
The screenplay, as I've said multiple times, deviates considerably from the story of the original game. The best way I could describe this would be to say that the adaption has put its hair into a much nicer ponytail than its source material: previously unrelated plots are all tied together, with no split-off ends. A mere mid-game boss becomes a major player in the plot, someone who was a small character in the game's first act becomes the most important antagonist. In avoidance of spoilers, I won't say anything more.
Now, onto the direction. This part is the absolute truest to the game itself, which is hard to pull off for an action game. The feel of the bullet-time mechanic is fully present, with short shots of super-slowmotion rather than overdone and overextended semi-slowmotion. There is not one, but two instances of Max actually pulling off the game's signature "shootdodge" dive. And that's just in the case of action sequences.
All in all, I am not afraid to say that Max Payne is the best videogame movie yet released, and a massively good movie on its own merits as well. I recommend you to go see it whether you've played the games or not. _________________

Behold! Nobody has posted in here for a long time! But now I have!
Bwahahahaha!
This is my new favorite movie. I laughed, I cried...
And most importantly, I cried.
I almost never cry at a movie.
But I sure cried at the end of A Man Who Was Superman.
Yes, it is Korean. It has subtitles. Watch it sometime when you have two hours to spare. _________________ Apparantly, I'm like, off the vilg RESERVATION. Whatever that means. |

Super man thing: It sounded interesting from the movie descriptions, but I don't think I would ever actually get around to renting it (cause my opinion on the movie is like.... SO important... -_-')
